Maria Nengeh Mensah

Maria Nengeh Mensah joined the Legal Network’s board of directors in 2013.

Maria is a full professor at the École de travail social de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), where she has taught women’s studies since 2002. A dedicated researcher, she conducts action-research projects which bring together community and university representatives around challenges related to the social exclusion of persons living with HIV, as well as sexual and gender minorities. She has created numerous awareness-building tools and education resources for various public service stakeholders: community, social, health, police and judiciary services, municipalities and media. Since 1995, Maria has been active in numerous organizations, namely: Canadian AIDS Society, AIDS Community Care Montréal, Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, Centre de ressources et d’intervention en santé et sexualité, Comité projet action sida femmes (PASF), Coalition des organismes de lutte contre le sida (COCQ-SIDA), Stella and many sex worker groups around the world.

A master’s graduate in sexology from UQAM, and a Ph.D. graduate from Concordia University, her expertise in discourse analysis and media-based messages was channeled in the 2003 paper « Ni vues ni connues: femmes, VIH et médias ». She also published an anthology entitled « Luttes XXX: inspirations du mouvement des travailleuses du sexe » in 2011.
