Liesl Gerntholtz joined the Legal Network’s board of directors in 2008.
In May 2008, she assumed the role of director of the Women’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch, having been Executive Director of the Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre to End Violence Against Women (TLAC) in Johannesburg since 2005. Prior to this, Liesl was manager of the legal unit of the AIDS Law Project (ALP) of South Africa, and between 1998 and 2000, she was the head of the Legal Department at the Commission on Gender Equality, also in South Africa. She also practised as a member of the Johannesburg bar for a period of 6 years after obtaining her LL.B., and before joining the Legal Department of the South African Human Rights Commission.
Liesl is a member of the advisory committee for the Law and Health Initiative of the Open Society Institute and a member of the advisory board of the Southern Africa Litigation Centre’s HIV/AIDS Program.
