About the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network
Founded in 1992, the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network (www.aidslaw.ca) promotes the human rights of people living with and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, in Canada and internationally, through research and analysis, advocacy and litigation, public education and community mobilization. The Legal Network is one of the world’s leading advocacy organizations working in the area of HIV/AIDS, human rights and law.
Job description
The Director of Development and Outreach is a member of the management team and reports to the Executive Director. S/he is responsible for supporting the Executive Director and other members of the management team in achieving the overall goals of the Legal Network, managing the organization and implementing its strategic plan. The Director of Development and Outreach is supported by and works closely with the relevant staff of other units (Finance, Communications, Program Support, and Research & Policy).
The Director leads the Legal Network’s efforts to enhance its funding, membership and profile. Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Fundraising: leading all aspects of the Legal Network’s fundraising, including: identifying new potential sources of funding; writing compelling and effective funding proposals to government programmes, foundations and other donors; collaborating in producing other fundraising materials; developing and initiating fundraising strategies of various sorts (including recruiting and working with a circle of prominent Honorary Advisors to raise both funds and the profile of the Legal Network and its human rights work);
- Donor relations: preparing reports to donors; acting as the Executive Director’s delegate in relations with donors as necessary and appropriate;
- Member relations and recruitment: developing and implementing strategies to expand the Legal Network’s membership; cultivating members as individual donors; and
- Events management: acting as the lead manager responsible for planning and logistics of major, ongoing Legal Network events and other public outreach initiatives (e.g., symposia and other large public events; annual general meetings; principal staff liaison for coordinator of International AIDS Conference activities).
Qualifications
This is a new position within the Legal Network. We require a person who is ready to help direct the growth and development of our expanding organization, with the fundraising expertise to take us to the next level. The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- university degree or equivalent combination of training and experience;
- a minimum of five years’ experience in fundraising and donor relations, including demonstrated experience in writing grant proposals and other fundraising materials;
- familiarity with HIV and human rights issues;
- demonstrated experience with relational databases;
- demonstrated skills in managing projects, including juggling multiple tasks;
- excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French (with ability in other languages, particularly Russian, an asset);
- excellent proofreading skills and attention to detail;
- ability to travel within Canada and internationally; and
- initiative, perseverance, flexibility, collegiality and a passion for social justice.
